Product FAQs

Why do you use palm fruit oil in the Daiya Wedges?

Palm oil is an essential ingredient in our wedges and slices.  It enables us to create the cheese-like texture of our products, which could not be duplicated using another plant-based oil. This is because palm oil has very unique properties, making it solid at room temperature without hydrogenation. It is important to us to provide our customers with products that are as close to dairy-based cheese as possible, and palm oil allows us to do this.

Where do you source your palm fruit oil?

All of the palm oil we source is from Brazil (which is not a natural habitat for orangutans.) Our supplier, which is certified by EcoSocial and the Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil (RSPO), works with several independent farmers to replace slash and burn practices with a sustainable organic system. The company helps preserve forests surrounding the plantation by only replanting oil palms in degraded areas.

You don't have palm oil in your shreds, why do you use it in your wedges and slices?

The Daiya Wedges and Slices are not prepared the same way as the shreds. Because they are ready-to-eat without cooking or heating, we use palm oil to obtain a texture that resembles that of real cheese.

Are your products allergen free?

Yes, Daiya products are free of many common allergens including; dairy (casein and lactose), gluten, egg, peanuts and tree nuts (excluding coconut).

Does it freeze?

Daiya shreds can be frozen and reheated. It will retain its melting, stretching and flavour properties. Like most products, you shouldn't re-freeze Daiya after it has already been frozen and thawed.

We do not recommend freezing the wedges.

Are your products Organic / GMO?

Although Daiya is GMO free, our product is not organic at this time.

Are your products Kosher?

All Daiya products except for our pizzas are OU Kosher certified.

You'll find more tips on cooking with Daiya in our Recipes section.

How much should I use on a pizza?

It is important to use the optimum amounts of Daiya on pizza for best performance. Below are optimum recommendations resulting from performance tests in mass market pizza franchises throughout North America.
10 inch=110 grams (4 oz); 12 inch=160 grams (5.5 oz); 14 inch=220 grams (7.5 oz); 16 inch=280 grams(10 oz); 18 inch=358 grams (12.5 oz).

How do I bake with Daiya?

Use Daiya as you would dairy cheese. For best results (as a topping such as the top layer of a lasagna) add Daiya in the last 5 - 10 minutes (depending on temperature) when baking. This will yield smooth melting properties without excessive browning.
