From luscious, layered lasagnas to perfectly crisp pizzas to creamy Tiramisu, many Italian dishes have two things in common: 1. They’re delicious, and 2. They’re traditionally full of dairy. And while it’s totally acceptable while dining out to order a bowl of spaghetti without the parmesan, at home, we’re able to get a little more creative and whip up some seriously creamy, comforting and even cheesy dairy-free Italian dishes.
Here are some mouthwatering recipes, to help get you started:
Flat Bread Recipe, from In Pursuit of More
Italy’s answer to the pita, this savory and satisfying flat bread made of chickpea flour is great as a snack or side dish. Try it topped with sautéed peppers or mushrooms, slathered with some Pesto à la Daiya, or as an accompaniment to a bowl of soup.
Vegan Pasta Recipe, from My Darling Vegan
With its silky texture and mildly sweet flavor, puréed pumpkin is a natural fit for creamy comfort food. These stuffed shells offer a fun (and dairy-free) twist on a classic by adding some Daiya Mozzarella Style Shreds, fresh garlic and cashew “ricotta” to the mix – and don’t forget the accompanying Sage Cream Sauce!
Dairy-Free Eggplant Parm Recipe, from Dr. Samantha
We love a good Eggplant Parmesan, but not necessarily the dairy cheese that tops it. Instead, try swapping that out for cashew ricotta and Daiya Mozzarella Style Shreds – and while you’re at it, skip the breading to make an allergy-friendly delight.
Vegan Lasagna Recipe, from Vegan Insanity (pictured)
Who says you can’t make a quality lasagna without dairy cheese? Follow this recipe and you’ll wind up with the savory, rich and creamy layers you’re craving – but without the dairy. (Hint: You’ll need a lot of Daiya Mozzarella Style Shreds.)
Manicotti Dessert Recipe, from Runnin Srilankan
Now, for dessert! A sweet version of a classic pasta dish, this one takes Manicotti shells and fills them with a combination of soaked cashews, almond milk, cocoa, and brown sugar. Top the entire thing with a luxurious chocolate sauce, and you’ve got an unforgettable dish.
Vegan Tiramisu Recipe, from This Rawsome Vegan Life
For many, an Italian feast isn’t complete without Tiramisu. This amazing rendition features a crust made of oats or nuts and raisins, gluten-free Ladyfingers, and a luscious cream of macadamia nuts, coconut and pure vanilla extract. Trust us, you’ll want to lick the plate clean.
