Kid-Friendly Cooking

As the craft cabinet nears empty and the activity list finds an end, everyone (including the kiddos) seem to be looking for fun things to do. This is the perfect time to get creatively plant-based in the kitchen! 

Cooking with kids is not only the perfect way to get a delicious meal ready for the family, but also teaches the little ones about nutrition and works on those fine motor skills. Fun activities in the kitchen are a great way to introduce kids to plant-based eating, because let’s face it, everything tastes better when it’s fun. 

With that in mind, we threw together this list of benefits and tips for kid friendly cooking and a few delicious plant-based ideas that we know the kids will love (and you will, too)! 

Calling all Creative Energies. 

Kids can do some pretty amazing things. Cooking with them can be an outlet for all of that creative energy and excitement. Whether it be creating an original recipe, filming a fun cooking show in the kitchen, or letting them explore new flavors, kid-friendly cooking can be a great way to get the creative juices flowing. 

Curious Kiddos Unite. 

Bringing your kids into the kitchen can serve as an opportunity to introduce them to things they haven’t tried before. As a way in, there are plenty of fun activities that might get them interested in what they eat. For example, arranging food you’d like your kids to try into a shape or a face. This is a fun way to both explore new areas of plant-based goodness but also encourage trying new things. 

Hands that Want to Help. 

Aside from the creative and exploratory benefits of having your kids in the kitchen, it’s also nice to have some help! Giving them tasks can both encourage helping out around the house and teach them about safe cooking practices from a young age. 

Recipes They’ll Ask to Make Again. 

Below are a few recipes from our site that are perfect for kid-friendly cooking. It also happens to be a great introduction to delicious plant-based eating! (see slide 14)

Pizza Bagels: 

Fun sized pizza bites!  

  • 5 Gluten-free bagels, sliced. 
  • 1.5 Cups Pizza Sauce 
  • 1.5 Cups Daiya Mozzarella Style Cutting Board Shreds 
  • 1.5 Cups Daiya Cheddar Style Cutting Board Shreds

Cheezy Mac: 

The best way to stick to a classic your kids will love or mix up an original recipe. A good way to take the Daiya Cheezy Mac to a creative space is to lay out toppings that your kids might enjoy and let them dress the dish with all of the toppings that  they want (thus, creating their own original recipe). Here are a few toppings we love to play with:  

  • Peas and Broccoli (classics!) 
  • Fresh herbs 
  • Other favorite fresh veggies 
  • Plant-based hotdogs 
  • Crackers, GF bread crumbs and other crunchy things! 

Sand Pudding Cups: 

A plant-based treat inspired by beautiful beaches and lots of fun!

  • 1 Pkg GF vanilla cookies 
  • 5 GF graham crackers 
  • 2 small boxes of vanilla instant pudding 
  • 1 Pkg Daiya plain cream cheese style spread 
  • 12 oz non-dairy whipped cream
  • 1 box GF animal crackers 
  • 12 mini umbrellas
  • 12 jawbreakers or gumballs
